Purpose of Use
The stainless steel latch pin with ball lock is designed for the secure yet flexible connection of separate components that need to be frequently detached and reassembled. It is particularly suitable for environments requiring high corrosion resistance, such as maritime settings, mechanical and plant engineering, or outdoor technology. Thanks to the AISI 316 (V4A stainless steel) material, it is durable, rust-free, and withstands saltwater, moisture, and aggressive chemicals. The purpose is quick tool-free assembly combined with reliable locking via balls that prevent unintended release.
How It Works
The latch pin consists of a cylindrical shaft made of stainless steel with a handle (often plastic or metal) and a ball lock at the end. The balls are seated in a bore at the shaft end and are pushed outward by an internal spring.
- Installation: Insert the pin into the matching bore (e.g., in a clevis or receptacle). Once fully inserted, the balls snap into a counter-bore and secure the pin axially against slipping out. The holding force, depending on size (e.g., 6–8 mm diameter), can reach several hundred Newtons.
- Release: Press the button or ring on the handle – this pulls the balls inward via a pin mechanism. The pin can now be easily withdrawn. Optionally, a magnetic axial lock can hold the pin in the insertion position to prevent loss.
- Maintenance: Clean the pin regularly from dirt or corrosion residues. Check the spring and balls for wear; the pin is reusable and requires no lubrication.
The mechanism is standards-compliant (e.g., DIN-similar) and straightforward: plug-and-play without additional tools.
Examples of Use Cases
- Maritime Application: Securing stays or clevis ends on rigging and booms on yachts – quick release for maintenance, secure hold in rough seas.
- Mechanical Engineering: Temporary fixing of workpieces in milling or drilling machines; the ball lock prevents loosening due to vibrations.
- Furniture and Assembly Construction: Quick assembly of scaffolding or exhibition stands where parts are frequently rearranged.
- Outdoor Equipment: Securing tent poles or bike racks – rust-proof and weather-resistant for long-term outdoor use.
