Purpose of the Copper Press Clamp
The copper press clamp is used for the secure and permanent fastening of stainless steel ropes, particularly for forming loops, stoppers, or attachments. Due to its corrosion-resistant copper material, it is ideal for applications in humid, salty, or industrial environments where steel clamps would corrode. It ensures high breaking forces (up to several tons, depending on rope diameter) and complies with standards to minimize corrosion risks. The purpose is to create robust, low-maintenance connections that extend the lifespan of rope constructions and meet safety standards.
How It Works
The press clamp works through mechanical deformation: The rope end is threaded through the round copper sleeve and doubled back to form a loop. The sleeve is then compressed using a hydraulic press tong or a 2-in-1 press tong (with the appropriate die). This evenly displaces the copper around the rope, creating a firm, vibration-resistant hold without gaps. The pressing force must be adapted to the rope size (e.g., 1–2 tons of pressure for 5 mm ropes) to achieve optimal interlocking. After pressing, the connection should be visually inspected and, if necessary, tested with a pull test to validate the breaking strength. Important: Always use suitable tools and consider a safety factor of at least 5:1 for load-bearing applications.
Examples of Use Cases
Construction: Creating lifting or towing loops on construction cranes – a 6 mm copper press clamp can hold up to 2 tons, ideal for temporary load handling.
- Garden and Outdoor Area: Securing fences or pergolas with 3 mm ropes; the corrosion resistance protects against weather influences.
- Industry and Mechanical Engineering: As a stopper in conveyor systems or automotive production, e.g., for 4 mm ropes in assembly lines, where high wear resistance is required.
- Maritime Applications: On ship rigging or fishing rod connections, where saltwater protects the copper sleeve from rust and replaces durable knots.
