Purpose of Use
Stainless steel gill plates serve as weatherproof ventilation grilles that enable the exchange of fresh air while keeping out rain, dirt, and insects. They are mainly used in maritime applications (e.g., on boats or ships) to ventilate cabins or engine rooms without allowing moisture to enter. Thanks to their corrosion resistance, they are also suitable for camper vans, caravans, outdoor building ventilations, or industrial systems. The version with fly screen (usually made of fine metal mesh) provides additional protection against insects, while the one without screen ensures unrestricted airflow – perfect when no insect protection is needed.
How It Works
The gill plate functions like a "gill" system: The slanted lamellae (gills) direct air inward while blocking water and dirt from entering.
- Installation: Secure the plate with screws (usually 4 holes provided) to the outer wall or deck. Optionally connect it to a hose or duct for directed airflow. A protective film on the surface guards against scratches during installation.
- With Fly Screen: The integrated mesh (e.g., stainless steel or polyamide) is located on the inside and prevents flies, mosquitoes, or dust from entering without significantly impeding air circulation (free area approx. 19–43 cm² depending on size).
- Without Fly Screen: Offers open lamellae for higher airflow, ideal for dry or controlled environments. The lamellae are oriented horizontally or vertically (e.g., 1x3 or 2x6 gills) to optimize the airstream.
- Maintenance: Clean it simply with water and mild soap; the stainless steel is low-maintenance and rust-free. Avoid abrasive agents to preserve the surface (often brushed or polished).
Examples of Use Cases
- Boat/Cabin: A gill plate with fly screen (e.g., 128 x 66 mm) mounted on the hull ventilates the interior during travel and keeps mosquitoes away – ideal for overnight stays on the water.
- Motorhome/Camping: Without screen (e.g., 232 x 116 mm) for the engine compartment to ensure cooling without insects entering; saves space and weight.
- Building Ventilation: In a basement or shed, a larger model (e.g., 200 x 200 mm) with screen to exhaust moisture and keep pests out – prevents mold growth.
- Industry: In a workshop without screen for quick venting of fumes, combined with a swan neck in the duct to avoid condensate.
With these plates, you ensure safe, efficient ventilation – easy to install and durable.
